District Governor (2009-10) : Shashi Varvandkar

Rtn Shashi Varvandkar was born in an agricultural family. He did his schooling at Katni in Madhya Pradesh. Later, he post-graduated in English and went on to acquire a Diploma in Business Management. Rtn. Shashi presently runs his own business of marketing and servicing of diesel engines at Raipur in Chhattisgarh.

Rtn. Shashi joined Rotary in 1986 as member of Rotary Club of Raipur and is a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Raipur Millennium. He has been actively involved in all projects and programs of Rotary at the club and district levels. His special area of interest is to serve the physically challenged persons, whom he likes to call differently abledpersons. He has successfully synergized this interest with the larger goals of Rotary. Over the years, he has got imbued with the spirit of Rotary and this has become a way of life for him. Rtn. Shashi is a recipient of the Four Avenues of Service Award and the Calgary Challenge Award. He has led a GSE team of our district to Brazil. He was the first Rotarian from Raipur to enroll as a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow (MPHF). He successfully motivated all members of his home club to liberally contribute towards the Rotary Foundation, making it a 100% PHF Club.
Besides Rotary, Rtn Shashi has been actively involved in several other social organizations. He has served as a Trustee & President Trust of Maharashtra Mandal, Raipur and Natya Pramukh of the Maharashtra Natya Mandal, Raipur. He is a stage artist and has given award-winning performances in full-length plays in Hindi and Marathi. He has also acted in TV Serial and his first 13-episodes serial in lead role was telecast on Doordarshan and it won high acclaim. A versatile personality, Rtn. Shashis current interest is yoga for well-being of all. He is serving as Yog-prashikshak of Patanjali Yog Samiti. This is an interest that is shared by his spouse, Anne Dr. Shilpa. The couple sees this as another opportunity to serve the ailing society.
Not only in Yoga, but in all his initiatives, Rtn. Shashi is actively supported by Anne Shilpa, who is a Sanskrit scholar by education. The couple has a daughter Shuchita, happily married to Abhishek and a son Siddharth. While Shuchita and Abhishek are computer engineers, Siddharth is studying engineering.

A friend of all and a person who proactively reaches out to those that need help, Rtn. Shashi's fond desire is to be identified and known all around primarily as a Rotarian!


Rtn. Umakant Sharma was born on 14th July 1952 at Gopalpur, District Shahdol (M.P.) in a renowned family. His father Shri Suresh Chandra Sharma is also an advocate practicing for more than 50 years in District Court at Shahdol.
Rtn Prof. Dr. Narayan Mishra is a Chest Physician of National and International repute. He is born on 1st February 1951. to Smt Bimla and Sri. Krushna Chandra Mishra, a nationally acclaimed agricultural scientist.
